In light of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, our laboratory together with the XChem team at Diamond Light Source are focusing efforts to discover novel antiviral therapeutic possibilities. We have been able to rapidly solve structure of the SARS-CoV-2 protein module called macrodomain (part of the viral multidomain Nsp3 protein) and then completed a large crystallographic inhibitor fragment screen against this essential viral enzyme. We identified a large number of different chemical compounds targeting the active site of the macrodomain enzyme that we aim to further develop into more powerful inhibitors and hopefully into novel antiviral drugs. We have made our data publicly available immediately. Congratulations to Marion Schuller, Johannes Rack and Kang Zhu and our collaborators in Frank von Delft laboratory for their heroic effort. Congratulations to Pietro Fontana for passing his viva. This makes him the first student in the Ivan Ahel Lab to obtain his PhD at the University of Oxford since the lab moved here from the university of Manchester. He was also awarded a 6-month extension to finish his research with us before he moves to Boston to take up a postdoctoral position at the University of Harvard.

Ivan Ahel has successfully renewed his Wellcome Senior Research Fellowship in Basic Biomedical Science. The fellowship will provide around £2 million over 5 years, starting from 1 Oct 2018, to sponsor his research into serine ADP-ribosylation in genome stability and human disease.
